Let Loose. This is the Tomboy, all grown up.

There is no time better than now to be reliving your active, lively youth through the stylistic endeavors of your favorite old, and up-and-coming designers.

It may have begun with the introduction to the boyfriend tank (which Alexander Wang does so well). The luxe blazer came along, originally claimed by YSL in 1966 with le smoking, lovingly updated by Dior Homme pour Femme in F08. Following with pants of all sorts, the world was introduced to ethnic-inspired dhotis and jodhpurs galore and most recently the “boyfriend jean” (if you're into jeans that is), topped off with a proper chapeau and towering high heels, but only for those who dare.

No time has ever been so kind, loose fitting and comfortable (only for clothing, needless I remind you) – enjoy these fits now, at last they are finally here to stay.

because i do sincerely care about politics (and fashion)

"

Who says these are bleak times? On one matter at least, designers are positively euphoric. That is the Obama presidency, a two-part point of light. While much of the glee centers around the President-elect and his policies, Michelle Obama radiates a powerful style all her own. So step aside, Angelina. You too, Madonna, not to mention the bevy of pop tarts, gossip girls, “High School Musical” grads and even potential Oscar divas, now all suddenly second-tier. The American fashion industry hasn’t had a catch this big since, well, since another icon of Democratic chic took up residency on Pennsylvania Avenue in 1961.

For the big guns at least, dressing Michelle may prove even more of a challenge, since her chic is more lowercase democratic than was Jackie’s. Throughout the campaign, the first lady-to-be has avoided all major names save Narciso Rodriguez, while showing a proclivity for locals (Chicago’s Maria Pinto), young types (Thakoon; Jason Wu) and cost-conscious labels (Donna Ricco; J. Crew).

Nevertheless, just about everyone yearns to dress Michelle, who could raise the profile of American fashion around the world. Yet with the exception of Maria Cornejo, her current favorites, as well as a few majors, declined WWD’s request for sketches. Some are loath to presume to offer unsolicited advice, while others, it seems, are definitely in the Inaugural sweepstakes and prefer, or have been asked, to keep their participation low-pro.

But plenty more happily offered their visions for Michelle and her charming first daughters, for the big day and evening events of Jan. 20."

IN A NEW YORK STATE OF MIND

OH YES, INDEEDY!

eat and feet

Manolo likes milkshakes and says that holding shoes is bad luck. I also hear that giving shoes as gifts are also bad luck... I wonder who comes up with these things.

Look, models eat. I feel slight competition to Coco's dancemoves...

BALLYGIRL

BALLY is a Swiss brand I have loved for quite a while now. Its boho-esque feel sweeps me into a dreamland only a certain someone can kick me out of. A combination of a modest, modern, countryside (suburban?) girl always ready to kick-ass is how I would describe it...

Peep their take on the mary jane, oh how I envy her so:

Guniga platform shoes

So, I visit The Satorialist almost on the daily. I like to save some of the looks that really appeal to me on my phone, just to stare at when I'm passing time... examining every detail I can possibly fill on my screen, in hopes I stumble upon a piece similar to that in the photo, in the near future.

As he shoots the street for inspiration, I save the looks as aspiration, and this would be the latest:

I'll post the other women dressed in black with their strong shoes and shoulders when I can find them!

There is no comfortable silence and no silent comfort

Essay: There is no comfortable silence and no silent comfort
First posted in January, 2005

"Soon silence will have passed into legend. Man has turned his back on silence. Day after day he invents machines and devices that increase noise and distract humanity from the essence of life, contemplation, meditation...Tooting, howling, screeching, booming, crashing, whistling, grinding, and trilling bolster his ego."

- Jean Arp
...

There is no quiet in a city. There is noise everywhere.

Or perhaps it is more appropriate to say that there is no comfortable silence and no silent comfort.

Silence is found in pockets, here and there. There's the quiet of a small bookstore, the calm of a nearly empty boutique, but you can't relax in these places; people want things from you, want your money, and you've bought enough. There are museums, perhaps, but they are spartan and cool and lacking in comfortable seats and you have to keep moving, have to keep looking at what's presented to you, you can't really just sit and think, and museums are rarely free and even more rarely deserted. There's the library, but they'll not allow for the enjoyment of tea or coffee while you read. There are parks, but even in the penetrating cold of January there are always other people with the incessant clack of their passing shoes against the pavement.

Should you find comfort, you are rarely if ever alone in your discovery; invariably there will be others clamoring for the space. And while they seek the comfort, they are not comfortable. Not in the silence that you cherish. They feel they need to fill that uncomfortable void with their chatter and their noise, the talk of their boring lives and their inane existences. Alone, without a companion of their own in that space with whom to converse, they cling desperately to their cellular phones and make those vital calls that simply cannot wait.

They have no idea that they're destroying the very thing you crave, and they wouldn't care if they did.

They have no concept of how pleasant it would be if they could only discover stillness in their minds for a portion of the day, quiet from the world. How could they possibly know? They are sharing this same cramped space with you and all these other humans. Thinking for a single moment that all of them could be silent for more than an instant - a single, coordinated instant - well, it's a dream not based in any sort of true reality. The shattering of glass against the floor heard above the din of the café gives them pause for but a fraction of a second, and only because they're curious as to who's at fault and hoping desperately that it isn't them. The loss of thousands and thousands of lives in a terror attack or a war or a natural disaster will perhaps give them reason to observe an astounding two or three or even five minutes of silence, but only if there are other people watching, and it can't be sustained for long. There's too much to do, you see. Too much going on. There's no time for silence in their lives.

You could attempt to extricate yourself from it all, to get away from them. You could sit alone in the quiet of a residential room claimed just for yourself, but even if you can't hear the cars on the street outside, the walls of your room border on other rooms filled with other people who fill their uncomfortable silences with background noise. And even when they turn off the music and the news and the televisions you can hear them. Twenty-four hours a day, someone in the building is moving, and you can hear them. You can hear them laughing and talking to each other as they come home after the party disperses, you can hear them take a two a.m. shower to cleanse the smoke from their hair, you can hear them at three a.m. pacing the floor with insomnia, you can hear them making their four a.m. snack, you can hear them flushing the toilet before dawn.

There is no quiet in a city. There is noise everywhere.

There is no comfortable silence and no silent comfort.

And you are never alone, though you may feel as if you are.

...

I could not exist in the city, though I understand why many do and why many could live nowhere else.

As for me, if I must put up with incessant noise, let it be the howl of the wind through the trees and the patter of rain on the roof and the calling of birds for their mates.

If there are people nearby, let them be humans from whom I can escape and be alone, removed from their movements and their conversations when I need the space. Let them understand why I need this without feeling hurt.

I will visit the city to enjoy its rewards, but I will always be happier to remain a visitor.

...

"The quieter you become, the more you can hear."

- Ram Dass

Sure I may go out a lot, but it does not mean I get excited about a lot of things I go out for ...mind you the free top shelf vodka and vino does makes me smile.

This Friday we find temporary RELIEF from real life. I'm happy and proud to say my friends take part in throwing this. I'm not telling you to go because they're my friends - but only because the music is going to be superbe, you get to shake your rump on the large dancefloor and there are no excuses because there are no other good parties going on in Toronto this Friday.

Line-up includes: Scott Seewhale (of Nacho Lovers), Alias, Egyptrixx and Sek One (The Curb Crawlers). Color Bar Kids and Steph D doing visuals and Bombaman on the mic.

RELIEF is this Friday the 21st of November at Augusta House (152A Augusta).
Free before 11, 5$ after.
Get crunkie for cheap 'cause you know you need some RELIEF.

SEK ONE has made a promo mix for this event. This is also his November mix... blast it in your cars, it does make you that much cooler.

best tee around

the cliche white tee [no names necessary] has had its overrated glory for quite sometime now. its simple crew and plunging v-neck worn with such ease... but most definitely worn out by many. [ to covet with compassion ] space fb created their unisex white tee (purchased for maybe $9 or less at one of their sales along St-Laurent... not the actual store). i purchased this tee a few years ago... stretched, washed and worn it out, but it still holds so much character and its seams so well (despite the reviews of their awful quality, i've had no problems!)

the unisex garment (if created right and with care) is something i am quite fond of - allowing both genders to share in such a creation means it was made with that extra love that some of us just want to feel ...but can never really feel.

i only wish that the most simple item held in peoples closets was paid more attention to, more often. viscose, cotton blend designer tees are nice sometimes - but at 100 bucks a pop - I'd most likely be living in the cold by now with only two things in hand ...a peppermint vanilla latte and my blackberry. god, what does this say about myself.

now i ponder, will i ever find another one of these precious tees?

12 YEARS OF RAVE

best of both worlds
Claude Von Stroke - Who's Afraid of Detroit (Stanton Warriors Remix)

The Guvernment complex in Toronto celebrated its 12th anniversary of catering to top notch worldwide DJ's and all-night party goers with a Thanksgiving Long weekend bash. I must say it was quite a hoot and a half. It kind of freaks me out I've been having fun there for the past seven years. Well whatever, big that up.

Love to ya boy MUTT for hooking it up - shouts to Dieselboy for playing the MASSIVE Messiah remix - and love to Jen & Toby, just cause they're that great.

I'm a fan of Stanton Warriors. I'm also a jackass for forgetting they were playing the next room over from where I was!!

how ludacris!

So, Ryerson lets me park my car (whenever I bring it) in the Pitman Hall parking lot for $9 a day ($4 extra if I stay until midnight). Now they offer bike parking for all those cyclists in the NEW Bicycle Room. It is available for the remainder of the academic year (until April 30, 2009) for a fee of $90.40, including taxes or for a 12-month period for a fee of $135.60, including taxes.

THIS IS MONSTROUS!! Look, normally I dispise some cyclists and hate their nasty ways on the road but I'd have to say this is downright wrong. Cyclists cycle in order to 1) save money 2)ignore car costs 3)DO IT BECAUSE ITS FREE. How embarassing Ryerson...

you know when you want to be somebody at some moment in time?

well i want to be her...

Robin Thicke

Ever since the release of Wanna Love You Girl with Pharrell, I've had such a fangirl crush (one of my many) on Mr. Robin Thicke. Yes, the son of famous Canadian Allan Thicke of Growing Pains!

Turns out REMG will be bringing him down on the 6th of October at the Kool Haus in Toronto. Perfect timing as it will be my post-birthday celebration. Come whoever pleases *blushes*

For the (love of the) Young & Rebellious

Fall has finally crept upon us, but of course with fashion always been at least a season and a half ahead the Spring 2009 RTW Topshop Unique line has been released - and it definitely ain't for the (old and) faint of heart. If you know me (personally), you know I'm not too fond of Topshop, but this collection has given me a slight change of heart and I'm proud to admit it.

"There was nothing profound about the love-heart prints, jumpsuits, parachute-silk batwing tops, and reruns of teddy boy and new wave tailoring, and it was a relief. Trying too hard isn't a good look for either Topshop's customers or a high-street brand, however on-it the brand might be. Result: For the first time since it debuted in 2005, this collection stopped pretending to be what it isn't, and came over as genuinely young."

So youthful, so pretty, so LONDON!!!

14 September 2008

so today i read...

"...university can be some of the best years of your life so make sure you go after everything that interests you, because you really only get the chance once and it really is a shame to waste it." -A.P.

You know what's funny? How you hear this a billion times over and when a person you barely know says it, it actually sticks and means something even more.

Holidays in the Sun

I have realized that I am long overdue for your typical sunny beach vacation, but I say F that because there is much time (and many more years before I become old and lazy) to just lay on a beach, soaking in the sun's cancerous UV rays.

I do incredibly appreciate mother nature for being so kind to me thus far. The last week has consisted of beer, hours of boating in Invermere, Aurora's Sunday night banger, only one 'late' night, a hike up Sulphur mountain, ice cream and good pizza, Lake Louise, Mt. Norquay and mountain goats. I will get to do my last bit of sightseeing today here in Banff via horseback and complete the rest of the day with a little bit of brunch and spa action.

Flight to Vancouver at 13:00 tomorrow then off to Shambhala. Hope to see YOU there!

The Wild, Wild West ...of Canada - Day 2

My first day was spent in Calgary. Did a little shopping and enjoyed some Chinese food but was deathly jet lagged due to a very screwed up sleep schedule, therefore let us just proceed to day two:

The air is crisp in the morning here in Banff and even more so when the sun finally sets (that being at 23:00MST). My fingers are fine now, but the veins in my hands are just gaining back the flow of blood. I have just completed my first nature walk along the Bow Trail. The photos I have taken do not do any justice nor can words even explain the wondrous beauty that is The Canadian Rockies. I take no regret in staying fairly sober my first night on the town this evening prior, as I would not have been able to enjoy this day as much as I already have.
Here, all seem friendly. The nights in 'town' are full of intoxicated young hooligans roaming the streets, this including: the locals, the French, and all those who work in town and are from everywhere BUT.
So much more to see and explore, still so many friends to make, but most importantly still so many memories to create.

Interesting things about the Banff National Park (in which the Fairmont residences are located, and where I am situated) can be read here and information about the Canadian Rockies can be found here.

accessorize

i've always been a suck for accessories. expensive, vintage, moderately priced (but mostly vintage) --- I LOVE THEM ALL! but i've always been the sucky one at choosing a handbag ...AND the sac à main is the ultimate accessory that can totally make or break one's ensemble....

Chloé has done me oh-so-right for the Fall season
